Frequently Asked Questions
TSA Fall Orientation (10/3/2012)
New to UW?

How do I get involved with TSA and meet Taiwanese students?
TSA hosts two Orientations to get new (and returning) students involved! Our Taiwan Summer Orientation will be held on July 13, 2013 in Taipei, Taiwan!
Stay tuned for more info about our Fall Orientation after school starts! And come out to our events - we love meeting new people!
We encourage you to join the Class of 2017 Facebook group! And of course, don't forget to check out our friends at the Taiwanese Overseas Student Association, too!

I'm an incoming freshman student. Where can I sign up for Advising & Orientation?
Make sure to check out UW First Year Programs to sign-up for A&O Sessions! There, you will meet with advisers and register for classes.
All incoming students must demonstrate English proficiency prior to registration!

I took college-level courses in high school (AP or IB). How can I get credit or take placement tests to exempt these courses?
UW has different policies/criteria for receiving credit for various AP/IB classes. Make sure to check out UW's Advanced-Level Credits policies.
For placement tests, the Office of Educational Assessment allows you to take tests in Mathematics, Chemistry, German, Japanese, Korean, French, Italian, and Spanish. No sign-up required and tests are given on a first-come, first-serve basis, so get there early! Additional languages are available by appointment.

Where can I look up course schedules?
Although you cannot register until your A&O Session, you can plan ahead and see what classes UW has to offer! Access to all your school needs (Registration, Email, etc.) is through MyUW.
Don't forget to check out Freshman Interest Groups (FIGs) for courses targeted specifically for incoming UW freshmen!

What about Early Fall Start (EFS)?
Early Fall Start is a great way to arrive early, get a head start, and earn some academic credits while you're at it! Some students enjoy it because it allows them more time to transition into US and college life.
New to Seattle?

Where can I find some Taiwanese food & groceries around Seattle?
You've asked the right people! Seattle is fortunate to have many Taiwanese restaurants, including Henry's Taiwan, HardWok Cafe, 101Yess, Din Tai Fung, Facing East, Rocking Wok, Yumbit, and Little Taipei, just to name a few.
If you enjoy bubble tea, make sure to check out Mee Sum Pastry and Oasis!
If you're in the International District/Chinatown, you'll want to stop by Uwajimaya for groceries. If you're heading north, then 99 Ranch Market is the place to go!

What does Seattle have to offer?
Seattle is perhaps best known for being the home of Starbucks; you can find the original store at Pike Place Market. Of course, check out the iconic Space Needle, too!
Each neighborhood has its own distinct culture and flavor, so there's lots to explore. There's also plenty of hiking, skiing, canoeing, beaches, and outdoor activities all around Seattle.
Fun Fact: Seattle is one of only two cities in North America that has a Din Tai Fung (鼎泰豐). Mmmm... :P

I'm looking for off-campus housing. Any suggestions or tips?
Many Taiwanese students choose to live around the Ave in the University District. Be sure to check out Travigne, Lee Plaza, and Acacia for open spots, and good luck!
And, of course, post in our Facebook group to see if anyone's looking for a roommate!
